Second-half surge carries Reading over Elizabethtown in District 3-AAAA boys' opener

Reading outscored host Elizabethtown 36-21 in the second half Wednesday night in the Red Knights' 57-45 triumph over the Bears in a District 3-AAAA first-round game in E-town.

Reading, the No. 10 seed, will take on No. 2 McCaskey in a quarterfinal-round game on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in the Giant Center.

Gilberto Benz-Puente scored 19 points for Reading, which trailed 24-21 at the half before turning on the jets in the second half.

The Knights used a 16-9 third-quarter run to grab a 37-33 lead, and then pumped in 20 fourth-quarter points to pull away from E-town, the L-L League Section 2 champ and No. 7 district seed.

Meme Burdine added 15 points for Reading, now 14-12 overall.

Tyler Koser led E-town with 17 points; the senior finished his career with 1,047 points.

Teammate Lucas Jewell was held to just six points, and he just missed out on that milestone mark, finishing his Bears' career with 959 points.
