LEWISBURG - Trinity freshman Bradley Buchter took the PIAA Class AA boys' diving championship by storm Thursday afternoon.
The atmosphere at a diving meet is almost always quiet and reserved.
It was a little more raucous Thursday as each of Buchter's dives produced louder and louder cheers.
And who could blame them?
All 11 of his dives were really that good.
Buchter put the other 31 competitors in his rear view mirror and scored 533.05 en route to winning the Class AA state title in his Bucknell debut.
His final eye popping tally blitzed the previous Class AA record of 496.45, which was set last year by Fairview grad Dan Roberts.
"I'm pretty happy, I was really just looking to come here and do my best," said Buchter, who scored 65 points on his final dive, a inward 2 1/2 somersault tuck.
"I wasn't thinking about the record, but I was happy that I was able to break it."
Buchter spent the previous two state meets from the Kinney Natatorium bleachers watching his older sister, Ashley, win Class AA state titles in 2011 and 2012.
Ashley Buchter, headed to Virginia Tech next season, missed this year's postseason with a broken foot.
"It meant a lot to me have Ashley here cheering me on," Bradley Buchter said.
"I wanted to win this regardless, but it was great having her here to watch."
On his eighth dive, Buchter produced another impressive score of 61.50 on his reverse 2 1/2 tuck.
Also Thursday, Milton Hershey's Ryan Blom, who missed qualifying for states last year by 1.2 points, finished fourth with a 401.10. His top dive came in the fifth round where he scored 46.80 points on a reverse 1 1/2 pike.
Palmyra's Jonas Ricci, who finished fifth here last year, took sixth on Thursday with a 390.80.
Ricci, the 2012 District 3-AA champ, ran into some problems in the fifth round when \his foot hit the board on a forward 2 1/2 pike. He rebounded to get as high as third early in the finals, but he over rotated on his final dive - an inward 2 1/2 tuck.
