Cumberland Valley regrouped on Thursday after its Wednesday loss to Central Dauphin and defeated Hempfield 3-2 to qualify for the PIAA tournament as the third-place team from District 3.
The Eagles will face a familiar foe in District 6 champion Mifflin County, also a member of the Commonwealth Division with whom CV split two games this season.
Kayla Sullenberger tossed a four-hitter for CV, giving up single tallies in the first and seventh innings. She had three strikeouts and no walks.
CV loaded the bases in the third inning and pushed two runs across when Hanna Edwards singled.
Hempfield's Nikki Rhoads homered in the seventh but Sullenberger shut things down after that.
Ironically, if CV defeats Mifflin County and Central Dauphin, the District 3 champion, defeats the third-place team from District 1, the Eagles and Rams would face each other for the fourth time this season in the second round of the PIAAs.
