Harriton claimed its first ever PIAA girls' lacrosse championship with a thrilling 8-7 (OT) win over Radnor Saturday afternoon at Hersheypark Stadium.
Senior midfielder Caleigh Foust led with five goals and scored the winning goal just 28 seconds into the extra session for Harriton, which had never advanced past the state quarterfinals.
Radnor, which won state titles in 2009 and 2019, led 5-1 when Brooke Pancoast found the back of the net with 4:01 left in the first half. The Red Raiders owned time of possession in the first half and had a solid defensive game plan for the speedy Foust.
Harriton, which beat Radnor twice in the regular season en route to the District 1 championship, started to come alive late in the half. Maura Henderson scored on a restart to trim the deficit to 5-3 at the break.
Maura Henderson's goal was part of a six goal run for the Rams as they scored the first four goals of the second half for a 7-5 lead. Radnor made another charge on goals from Shannon Quinn and Kate Stanley only three minutes apart to make it 7-7.
The two teams went scoreless for the final 11:44 of regulation despite some quality scoring chances from both sides. Harriton goalie Melina Avery made eight saves, while Radnor netminder Grace Collins finished with seven saves.
Harriton won the opening draw of overtime and Foust drove the net with a shot that grazed over the net. On the restart, Foust drove the net again and scored to touch off a big Harriton celebration.
Jane Henderson finished with a pair of goals for Harriton, while Quinn led Radnor with two scores.
