HS girls' tennis: Keystone Division preview

A profile of the girls' tennis season in the Keystone Division.

Gettysburgwill be the definition of a rebuilding team in 2012. Last season’s entire top seven is gone, so Mike Swogger will have his hands full. Sophomore Ann Matthews will step into the number one singles spot, which was vacated by Samantha Wright

Hersheyis a very even squad that that should benefit from the 3-2 format. Libby Nolan, a state tournament qualifier in doubles, will be the top dog for Cindy Wilfong. Adriana Von Rago and Julia Henrikus will hold down the last two singles spots this season. Last season’s regular season champs will have a chance at a repeat.

Lower Dauphinwas hit hard by graduation. The top five players from last season’s stellar run are now gone. Junior Romayne Sharp is penciled in to hold down the fort at number one singles, while senior Heather Grove will be counted on as well. Peggy Long returns to skipper the young squad which may go through some growing pains

Mechanicsburgis the safe bet for the 2012 season. The Wildcats return their entire starting lineup from last year, including Mid-Penn champion Nicole Coons. With returning talent such as Brooke Keefer, Lauren Bell, Katie Pritsch and Lexi Hoffman, Linda Till’s group is in for an exciting fall

Northernalso fell prey to graduation numbers, but senior Morgan Amsrud returns to anchor the lineup at number one singles. Amsrud qualified for Districts in doubles with the departed Lauren Berry. Fellow seniors Shelby Rocco and Cassidy Straw will be leaned on to round out the singles lineup. Despite the inexperience, coach Lee Wilson is optimistic about his club’s chances

Palmyra is coming off of a winless season in divisional play, so there is only room for improvement. Hanna Watsyk, Emily Sweeny and Lexi Kline return for Coach Matt Opilo. The Cougars are likely to be a bit more competitive this time around

Susquehanna Twp.senior Annie Doctrow and junior Jennie Sayre return for the Indians who will look to improve on last season’s 2-11 overall record. Riz Souilliard will be working with a bevy of youngsters who will need to develop quickly. This season could serve as a building block for the future.
