LANCASTER – This is not what Penn Manor coach Todd Mealy had in mind for his team’s first scrimmage.
According to a published report, Mealy and the Comets lost three key players to injuries on Saturday during Penn Manor’s scrimmage against Manheim Central.
LancasterOnline is reporting that two-way senior grinder Ethan Barley left with a hamstring injury, senior wideout/d-back Brett Caggiano suffered a broken collarbone, and junior running back/d-back Tyler Spangler broke his arm.
Ouch.
Mealy confirmed the injuries to PennLive.com later Saturday.
Barley, a 6-2, 260-pounder, was set to play tight end and be one of the Comets’ D anchors from his LB spot.
Caggiano, a 6-3, 210-pound playmaker, was Penn Manor’s top returning receiver.
The 5-8, 175-pound Spangler — how’s this for tough luck? — missed the Comets’ final six games last season after breaking his leg against McCaskey.

Penn Manor’s next scrimmage is Friday at home vs. Hershey at 6 p.m.
The Comets open the regular season on Aug. 30 with a non-league home game against Solanco. And it sure looks like they’ll be without a couple of key cogs in that game — and beyond.
