BOILING SPRINGS AT BIG SPRING
7 p.m. FRIDAY, BULLDOGS STADIUM
RECORDS: Boiling Springs 0-2; Big Spring 2-0
THE BUBBLERS: Through two games the opposition is averaging 36 per outing. The Boiling Springs offense continues to struggle, but it pales in comparison to surrendering that many points. A week ago against Greencastle-Antrim it was only 17-7 at halftime. The defense kept it a 10-point game going into the fourth quarter, but the offense only managed 80 total yards and was unable to answer the bell. This is a rivalry game, so getting focused should not be a problem. Key No. 1 is holding Big Spring to less than 350 total yards of offense.
THE BULLDOGS: How about 70 points in two games for an offense that starts six sophomores. There’s a good young stew cooking in Newville. That win over Millersburg has some more mustard on the bun after the Tribe upset Line Mountain last week. Getting out of Cove with a seven-point victory over Susquenita in a game that featured nine total turnovers and 16 penalties is one of those “we’ll take it” victories. Tristan Robb rushed for 153 yards on 22 carries with a touchdown. Expect to see a heavy dose of him this week. QB Garrett Chestnut has thrown for 355 yards and six touchdowns. So the Bulldogs are displaying flashes of balance.
THE CRUX: Boiling Springs has surrendered more than 700 total yards and 72 points in eight quarters. Big Spring has rolled up 70 points and nearly 600 total yards in a pair of victories. This comes down to the Big Spring offense holding serve, or does the Boiling Springs defense slow the wave?
SHAY SAYS: On the table for new Big Spring (-9) head coach Mike Berry is a 3-0 start. If that happens, consider it a culture shock for the Bulldogs’ program. This is still a young team and continued success is harder to maintain than attaining a little of the sweet winning nectar. The Bubblers haven’t shown they can stop an offense. Big Spring’s offense is a rising star. This is the Bulldogs’ game to lose.
