Hershey is right in the middle of the Mid-Penn Keystone Division field hockey chase, and looking like a team to be reconed with when the District 3-AAA playoffs come around next month.
Junior midfielder Lisa Winters is a big reason why.
Winters has seven goals and two assists for the 6-1 Trojans. She had nine goals combined the last two seasons.
Some of her goals have come at the right time too. Twice she has been the only goal scorer in Hershey victories. Winters had both goals in Hershey's 2-0 win over Susquehanna Twp. on Sept. 4. Then, last Saturday, she scored twice in a 2-0 victory against Manheim Twp. in the finals of the Hershey Tournament.
She answered the questions below an hour before the win over the Blue Streaks.
When did you get your start in field hockey?
I started in seventh grade, when we were allowed to play school sports. I knew I wanted to play because my brother, Shane, played ice hockey.
Who do you consider to be your mentors in field hockey?
Mr. and Mrs. Scola. [Tami is the Hershey head coach. John stepped down from assistant coaching duties this year]. They've taught me to always play as a team, and that in the end field hockey is going to prepare you to be a good person for life.
What would you say is the best part of your game?
My offense. A lot of of it is based on speed and getting the ball up to my forwards.
What aspect of your game needs the most work?
Defensively, when I'm left along with someone for a one-versus-one, to shut them down. Also to get there on a double team more quickly.
What are your goals for this season?
For myself, I'd really like to pull the team together and lead the younger kids, since we have a lot playing this year.
What is it like having Keystone Division rivalries with other top programs like Lower Dauphin and Palmyra?
I'm friends with a lot of those girls, so it's not a big rivalry away from the field. But it's nice to have that kind of competition with people who push you on the field.
