No. 1 Top-seeded Steel-High (11-1) won its ninth District 3 Class A football championship with a 26-7 win over York Catholic on Nov. 23 at Hersheypark Stadium. Quarterback James Warren and running back Shaheim Moody-Williams combined for 246 rushing yards and three TDs and the Rollers' defense, led by linebacker Twynique Chisholm-Wilkerson's interception return for a score, did the rest.
No. 2 Bishop McDevitt QB Nick Marsilio passed for four TDs and Andre Robinson ran for 125 yards and scored twice to lead the Crusaders (12-1) over Conrad Weiser, 49-21, in the District 3-AAA semifinals Nov. 22 at Rocco Ortenzio Stadium. Marsilio, who was 10-for-14 for 178 yards, had eight TD passes in his past two games.
No. 3 Lower Dauphin (12-1) knocked off top-seeded Wilson, 17-14, in the District 3-AAAA semifinals Nov. 22 in the Bulldogs' Gurski Stadium. Joe Julius kicked a 46-yard field goal with 10 seconds left to ensure the win over the defending district champs.
No. 4 There were various big plays and heroes for LD. QB Troy Spencer was the workhorse with 30 carries for 115 yards and TD runs of 7 and 11 yards. Georgie Tech-bound Trey Klock had a 29-yard reception to set up one score and had a 15-yard sack of QB Matt Timochenko to halt a Bulldog drive. Senior CB Spencer Snyder went high to intercept a Timochenko pass at midfield to end another Wilson possession. And punter Adam Domovich ran down an errant snap and got off a punt deep in his own territory that would have given Wilson a first down in the red zone.
No. 5 Former McDevitt QB Matt Johnson continued his strong season with Bowling Green by passing the Falcons to a 58-7 win over Eastern Michigan on Nov. 23 to set up a Mid-American Conference East Division title showdown with Buffalo. Johnson finished with 264 yards on 13-of-23 passing with three TDs.
No. 6 Lebanon Valley College's first appearance in the NCAA Div. III football playoffs went awry on a snowy day Nov. 23 in Springfield, Ohio. Wittenberg (10-1) ended the Flying Dutchmen's season at 8-3 with a 58-17 win that featured six TD passes by Tigers' QB Reed Florence. It was the final LVC game for seniors Joey Miller and Josh Borreli of Lower Dauphin and kicker Sean Fakete (Central Dauphin). Returning starters next year for LVC are Joey Scerbo (LD) and Zach Wierman (CD).
No. 7 On hand for Lebanon Valley's 60-57 men's basketball win over Moravian on Nov. 23 at LVC was Bishop McDevitt coach Jeff Hoke, a one-time star guard at Moravian. Hoke, who has a high-scoring veteran team returning this season at BM, remains good friends with Moravian coach Jim Walker and his staff. Among those returning for BM are Dyllon Hudson-Emory, James McArthur and Caleb Barwin. For LVC coach Brad McAlester, it was his 300th career win with the Dutchmen.
No. 8 A pair of East Shore athletes, Bre White (Lower Dauphin) and Taylor Bender (Central Dauphin), won national field hockey championships Nov. 24 for 20-1 Shippensburg University. Bender scored 10 minutes into the game and White added the clincher in OT as the Red Raiders downed Long Island University Post 2-1 for Ship's first national championship in any sport. White, the NCAA DII Player of the Year a year ago, had 15 goals and 11 assists this season.
No. 9 Another LD grad, Hunter Bracale, played in the NCAA Div. I national field hockey championship game Nov. 24 at Old Dominion for Duke, which lost to the University of Connecticut 2-0. Duke, the No. 4 seed, reached the final by beating No. 1 ranked Maryland 3-2 in the semifinals.
No. 10 The CAPA Vipers won the Under-11 DELCO League soccer championship recently by beating Harford United of Md. 2-0. The Vipers had a record of 10-1 this season.
