A proposal to replace a tennis doubles team that qualified for states but had one member injured before the PIAA tournament was voted down 23-7 by the PIAA Board of Directors at its meeting on Thursday evening.
The proposal came about because two District 3 girls' doubles teams that qualified for states this past fall each had one member suffer an injury heading into the state tourney. In both cases, the team was allowed to choose one other member of the roster to fill in the vacant spot, as long as the new player had not already appeared in the District 3 doubles tournament as part of another duo.
Had the proposal passed, the top finishing non-qualifier would get a spot in the state tournament, and the team that had the injury would be removed from the state bracket.
The possibility of having a designated alternate for the doubles team, like swimming and track and field relay teams have, was discussed but not voted on.
