When the next PennLive girls’ state basketball state rankings hit the World Wide Web on Wednesday morning, expect some major shake-ups, particularly in Class AAAA.
Six of our 10 top-ranked AAAA teams were in action on Saturday at Philadelphia University in the 13th Play-By-Play Classic.
No. 1 Spring-Ford — the reigning PIAA champ — fell to District 1 rival, and No. 2-ranked Mount St. Joseph, 39-34.
No. 3 North Penn, which fell to Central Bucks West earlier this week, suffered its second loss in a row, this time to No. 8 Upper Dublin, which remained undefeated with a 35-34 nip-and-tuck victory.
And No. 5 Mt. Lebanon, which made the trip east from Pittsburgh, lost to hot-shooting No. 9 Central Bucks West, which has wins in its last two games against No. 3 North Penn and No. 5 Mt. Lebanon.
Not too shabby.
What made Upper Dublin’s victory over North Penn even more impressive:
Coach Morgan Funsten’s leading scorer, senior guard Kayla McAneney, was on crutches after suffering what appears to be a gnarly knee injury on Friday during UD’s 53-33 win vs. Plymouth-Whitemarsh — handing P-W its first loss this season in the process.
One disappointing tidbit about Saturday’s Philly Classic: The much-anticipated match-up featuring Class AAA No. 3 Archbishop Wood vs. Class AA No. 1 Seton-LaSalle never materialized.
The Rebels never made it out of Pittsburgh, failing to make the trip to Philadelphia because Seton-LaSalle has snow-out games to make up.
One District 3 squad was in Philly on Saturday: Wilson, the reigning District 3-AAAA champ, fell to Philly InterAc participant Shipley 49-42, as the Bulldogs, ranked No. 1 in our initial girls’ state rankings this season, slipped to 6-7.
Senior point guard — and St. John’s recruit — Sox Alexander is Shipley’s catalyst.
Two of our state-ranked Class AA teams were in action at the Philly Classic on Saturday, and both won:
No. 2 Neumann-Goretti edged Jersey power Life Charter to go to 11-0, and No. 5 St. Basil Academy knocked off Philly Engineering & Science and improved to 12-1 — handing E&S its first loss this season in doing so.
Also in Class AA on Saturday, PIAA champ Bishop Canevin, No. 4 in our rankings, edged Shaler 44-43 to keep pace with Goretti and SBA.
Bishop Canevin’s next game: Tuesday at — ta-da — Seton-LaSalle.
So we could have some changes in AA come Wednesday morning, too. Stay tuned; and keep it at PennLive for our daily updates tracking the results of our state-ranked teams.
