Not the way Garnet Valley was hoping to make its debut in PennLive’s girls’ basketball Class AAAA state rankings on Wednesday.
The Jaguars, fresh in at No. 10, dropped a 38-33 decision to Abington in a District 1-AAAA second-round game.
The good news for Garnet Valley: The Jags were relegated to the playback round — Saturday vs. Neshaminy — and can still qualify for the PIAA playoffs.
The best game in the second round of the District 1-AAAA playoffs on Wednesday?
Spring-Ford, the reigning PIAA-AAAA state champ, rallied from a 17-point second-half deficit and beat Penn Wood 55-49. So the No. 4 Rams get a mega matchup on Friday vs. Class AAAA No. 7 Central Bucks West in a D1 quarterfinal.
Class AAAA No. 1 Mount St. Joseph also advanced in the D1 tourney on Wednesday, compliments of a 52-36 victory over Class AAAA honor mention Souderton. The Magic gets Bishop Shanahan in the quarters on Saturday, with a potential semifinal game vs. the Spring-Ford/CB West survivor next Wednesday.
The District 1-AAAA bracket is simply sensational.
Also Wednesday, Class A No. 1 Vincentian Academy got its WPIAL playoff run underway with an 82-14 romp over Carmichaels, setting up Saturday’s quarterfinal showdown vs. Frazier, which upset Class A honorable mention Sewickley Academy in the first round.
Thursday’s slate features the Philadelphia Catholic League semifinals, with Class AA No. 1 Neumann-Goretti taking on Class AAA No. 4 Bonner-Prendergast, and Class AAA No. 1 Archbishop Wood squaring off against Class AAAA honorable mention Cardinal O’Hara.
