Sabrina Mortell was already giving an appropriate farewell performance in her home pool before Saturday's session of the District 3-AAA girls' swimming championships.
The Cumberland Valley senior had already won the 200-yard freestyle gold medal on Friday, and was the No. 1 seed in the 500 freestyle.
But Mortell want more than just good, or even just a victory.
"I was aiming for the record," Mortell said.
Mortell set a new District 3-AAA mark in the 500 freestyle with a 4:54.31. The old record was 4:55.14, set by Jenn Windstein in 2001.
Although the record was her goal, that was not what Mortell was thinking about during the race itself.
"I just keep the same pace, unless my counter tell me to go faster," Mortell said.
It is hard to imagine Mortell going much faster, but she hopes to two weeks from now at the PIAA Meet at Bucknell.
"[My goal] is to just go faster," Mortell said. "As long as I go fast I'll be perfectly okay."
Wilson's Amber Cortazzo was second with a 4:59.05, and Twin Valley's hannah Schlegel was third with a 5:01.35.
