MVP: G Nehemiah “Bud” Mack, 6-0 so, Susquehanna Twp.
What more can you say?
As Susquehanna Twp. moved deeper and deeper into the District 3-AAA tournament, the remarkably composed Mack was able to raise his level of play as the games continued to grow in importance and scope.
Although Mack opened postseason play by uncorking a 20-point effort (3 rebounds, 2 assists) in Township’s 71-47 conquest of Northern Lebanon, he followed that effort with an 18-point burst in a 52-38 triumph over Berks Catholic that also was highlighted by his 7-for-8 work at the line as the Indians pulled away late.
Moving his high-octane, low-emotion theatrics to Giant Center for the 3-AAA semifinals, Mack erupted for 15 of his game-high 28 points in the final nine minutes of Susquehanna’s 60-57 win over Bishop McDevitt in overtime. Mack was 5-for-9 from beyond the arc in that conquest, hitting a clutch trey in the fourth quarter that ignited a Township rally and another to open overtime.
Mack also snared five rebounds against McDevitt — the 6-0 sophomore matched his career high with 28 points — dished out one assist and shared ballhandling duties with his brother, Gabe.
“Bud, he’s Division I, man,” Susquehanna Twp. head coach Vince Rogers said following the win. “He’s true Division I. He’s one of the best guards in Pennsylvania. We rode his back tonight. He hit those big buckets in the fourth period like ice water and one was a deep three.
“In the fourth period, when we took the lead, it was off him, too.”
While staying within himself in the championship game against Manheim Central, Mack still managed to toss in a game-high 18 points, grab four rebounds and drop three dimes in Township’s 59-44 triumph.
Just a typical outing for Susquehanna’s gifted backcourt standout, but when you string four of those together in a two-week stretch that’s MVP stuff.
