MVP: Jahaire Wilson, 6-3 jr F, York
About Wilson: A young man with a motor that runs hot every minute he's on the floor, the powerful York junior isn't always the tallest post player on the floor, but it's rare he'll be outworked for a rebound or put-back.
Head coach Troy Sowers is blessed with talented underclassmen on his championship roster, but Wilson is likely the one Sowers could least afford to lose. The Bearcats are simply a better team -- a championship-caliber team -- when Wilson is battling on the boards, swatting shots or digging for position.
In York's 78-64 victory over rival McCaskey in the Round of 16, Wilson dominated with 29 points (12-for-16 field goals), nine rebounds and three assists.
He followed with 12 points and eight boards in the 53-47 upset victory over No. 1 seed Wilson in the quarterfinals, then posted 18 points and 11 boards as the Bearcats slowed red-hot and post-oriented Hershey 69-58 in the semifinals.
Wilson capped his strong tournament with 13 points, nine rebounds, two steals and four blocks in Saturday's 54-52 comeback victory over Cedar Crest for the 3-AAAA championship, Wilson scoring two huge buckets in the final 2:30 and drawing the Falcons' best defender in the final sequence, which helped Kristopher Johnson sink an open jumper for the win.
"He doesn't quit," Sowers said after York won its 11th District 3 title. “He’s 6-3, but his heart goes way and above his stature. And that’s what you need. You need that in these kind of big games.”
