The Mid-Penn Conference has produced yet another Division I girls’ basketball recruit.

CD East junior standout Michaela Gelbaugh confirmed this week that she has made a verbal commitment to accept a scholarship offer and continue her hoops career at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.

UMBC competes in the America East Conference along with Albany, Stony Brook, New Hampshire, Maine, Hartford, Vermont, UMass-Lowell and Binghamton.

UMBC went 3-13 in the conference and 4-25 overall under coach Phil Stern this past season; Albany won the conference for the third year in a row and will play in the NCAA tournament.

Gelbaugh, CD East’s floor general and top scorer, had a standout season for the Panthers this winter, averaging 16.3 points and drilling 41 3-pointers for East, which went 14-10 overall and reached the District 3-AAAA playoffs.

She was a first-team Mid-Penn all-star selection.

Gelbaugh, who will begin her senior season with 653 career points, will join a pair of District 3 players at UMBC in another year.

Cumberland Valley senior Maddie Torresin and York Catholic senior Zaenna Echeverria have both signed with UMBC and will be on campus in the fall as freshmen.

Gelbaugh’s older sister, CaLee, is also a Division I recruit; she signed with Loyola (Md.) in February — after missing a good chunk of her senior season with CD East because of a recurring knee injury.
