GIRLS' TRACK AND FIELD

MID-PENN COMMONWEALTH DIVISION

The Mid-Penn Commonwealth Division is a strong section in girls' track and field, with quality athletes and quality teams.

That being said, Cumberland Valley won the Commonwealth last year with a 7-0 dual meet mark and could be even better in 2014. Sophomore distance runner Mady Clahane was piling up medals in her freshman year, including a District 3-AAA gold in the 3200 with a 10:55.87, and looks like she will improve this spring. Also, versatile senior Rachael DeCecco returns and already has five school records.

Harrisburg did not submit any preview information, but the Cougars will likely be part of the chase to catch Cumberland Valley. Sierra Brabham-Lawrence is a threat in any hurdle race.

State College was the District 6-AAA title last year. With Haley Crawford and Victoria Crawford performing well in the indoor season in the sprints and middle-distances, respectively, the Little Lions figure to be a force all spring again.

Another District 6 team in the Commonwealth, Mifflin County, is a little low on depth and numbers. However, Megan Becker and Erika Shawver are back after winning District 6 gold medals in the 4x400 and 4x100 relays, respectively.

Chambersburg, which was 5-2 last year, no longer has Marshay Ryan for near-automatic points in the long and triple jumps. Ryan, the winner of five state gold medals, is now at Auburn. But Natalie Holder and Courtney Group both returning, the Trojans are a legitimate force against anyone in the distance races.

Central Dauphin looks to make a mark on the track, with returning state medalist hurdler Britta Beleski leading a core group of Rams that can put together some contenders in the relays.

Carlisle and CD East appear to be in rebuilding situations. The Thundering Herd are short on upperclassmen, though juniors Shayla Dukes and Bryanna Youtzy are back in the sprints and throws, respectively. For the Panthers, senior Ericka Quenzer is back in the hurdles and jumps.
