When Lower Dauphin won the PIAA Class AAA field hockey state championship over Penn Manor 2-0 on Saturday afternoon, the Falcons did it with what head coach Linda Kreiser called "team scoring".

"We don't have a leading scorer," Kreiser said. "People have their channels and if they get the ball, they try to put it in."

The two goals that the Falcons scored were by two defensive backs, Gini Bramley and Delani Higgins. Bramley finished the season with two goals and Higgins with four.

Bramley scored on a penalty stroke with 28 seconds left in the first half, putting the ball low and to the left.

"I missed it high to the left [in a game against Hershey] so now I put it lower to the left," Bramley said.

Kreiser had no question that she wanted Bramley to take the stroke when the Falcons were awarded one.

"I don't even have to tell out to her anymore," Kreiser said. "She knows I want her to take it."

With 15:33 left in the second half, Higgins got into position at the left post and took a feed from Abby Julius to score the second goal.

"I saw [Julius] dribbling in and Devyn [Barry] running across, and I saw this opening," Higgins said.

While Bramley and Higgins were scoring, more noted scorers like Barry (16 goals) and Hunter Bracale (12 goals) were kept off the scoresheet. Not that they seemed too disappointed when they got their gold medals.

"It's a constant battle for every loose ball, to put it in the cage," Bracale said. "Today it was awesome that two defenders came out on top."

This has not been a new experience for the Falcons. Reserves scored key goals for them in the previous two rounds.

In the state quarterfinals, Anna Smuda and Julius came off the bench to score in a 3-0 win over Wissahickon.

In the semis, Smuda scored again in a 2-1 double-overtime win against Emmaus. In that contest, though, it was Bracale who scored the last goal of her high school career to send Lower Dauphin to the finals.
