LANDISVILLE - Different night. Same result.
Porscha Speller scored 16 points to pace a balanced attack, Lancaster Catholic forced 26 turnovers and held host Hempfield scoreless in the first quarter, and the Crusaders won the Black Knights' tip-off tournament Saturday night with a 57-23 win over Hempfield.
That's a 2-0 getaway for Lancaster Catholic, coming off a 30-4 season which included Section 4, L-L League and District 3 AAA championships on the way to the PIAA title game, where the Crusaders fell to Archbishop Wood.
Saturday, varsity newcomer Emily Colon scored a career-high 13 points, Danielle Atkinson chipped in with 10 points and freshman inside threat Caroline Scarff scarfed 10 rebounds for the Crusaders, who led 11-0 after the first quarter, 26-5 at the half and never looked back.
Hempfield, which toppled Carlisle 64-42 in a first-round game on Friday, didn't score against Lancaster Catholic until Hannah Kelly hit a free throw with 5:31 to go before the half.
And the Knights didn't get a field goal until Annie Hartman hit a driving layup with 1:41 to go in the half.
Courtney Nixdorf paced Hempfield with 7 points.
Neither team is back on the court until the L-L League crossover section openers next Friday: Hempfield will take on three-time reigning Section 2 champ Solanco in Quarryville, while Lancaster Catholic hosts Donegal.
