If the CD East girls' basketball team made any resolutions about how they perform on the court in 2013, the Panthers seems to be keeping their word.

In the first five days of the year, CD East has beaten three teams from different leagues.

The Panthers defeated Reading 57-43 on Wednesday, downed Carlisle 65-30 on Friday and won at Altoona 68-64 on Saturday.

CaLee Gelbaugh, who is the No. 2 leading scorer in the midstate with 18.9 points per game, led CD East with 20 points against Reading.

But when Gelbaugh was held to nine points against Carlisle, Brittany Robinson stepped up for 15 points. And although CaLee did score 19 against Altoona, it was her sister Michaela who led CD East with 24.

On Tuesday, the Panthers will resume their Mid-Penn Commonwealth Division schedule with a contest at Mifflin County. CD East is currently in a three-way tie for first place with Cumberland Valley and State College at 5-1, with Central Dauphin lurking just behind at 4-2.

ILLNESS AND INJURY

A couple of top scorers were held back in the last week by something other than the opponent's defense.

Cumberland Valley's Jackie Falconer, a Big 15 first team member last year, has been feeling ill since about New Year's Day. Eagle head coach Bill Wolf said that she has only been able to practice once in the past week.

Falconer still played in Friday's game against Central Dauphin and Saturday's contest at Wilson, though she played fewer minutes than usual Friday. In fact, she did not even enter the Wilson game until four minutes in.

"We were just trying to get her as many minutes as we could," Wolf said.

She was held to seven points against the Rams and eight against the Bulldogs, but Falconer still set up Kelly Jekot's game-winning shot in a 49-47 win over Central Dauphin.

The Eagles lost to Wilson, though, 50-34.

Northern Lebanon's Emily Brandt tore her ACL in a Dec. 21 game against Manheim Central. A season ago, Brandt led the Vikings with 15.2 points per game, and was scoring at a 12.9 clip this season.

Before the senior point guard's injury, the Vikings were 7-2 overall. Since Brandt has been out, they are 2-2.

After a 67-46 loss to two-time defending PIAA Class A champion Steel-High in the Annville-Cleona Holiday Tournament, Northern Lebanon showed some spark and flair for the dramatic.

The Vikings edged Halifax 34-33 in the A-C consolation game, then nicked Lancaster-Lebanon League 3 contender Garden Spot 36-34 on Wednesday.

Their momentum was slowed, however, by a 44-33 loss to Elco on Friday, knocking the Vikings to two games out of first place.
