Because more than a half-dozen outstanding performances keep popping up on the girls' basketball trail, we feel it's necessary to keep our string of Co-Player of the Week honors on point. This week, we “settled” on a pair of Mid-Penn guards that led their respective crews to a pair of short-week victories. Let's meet them.
THE PATRIOT-NEWS/PENNLIVE.COM CO-PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (Jan. 21-27)
Victoria Blackburn, 5-7 guard, Hershey: The Trinity transplant worked her magic, opening with a sizzling 21-point performance during the Trojans (15-2) dicey 57-53 victory over Keystone partner Susquehanna Twp. Two days later, the slashing point guard banked Hershey's lone second-half field, a 3-pointer, to help her side escape the defensive clutches of Lower Dauphin, 29-24. Blackburn secured 18 of her team's total in that one. Blackburn and the Trojans will try to avenge their only division loss, a 53-31 fall to undefeated Palmyra on Jan. 9, next week.
CaLee Gelbaugh, 5-9 guard, CD East: No question Charles Harvey's offense runs swift and is well-suited for Gelbaugh's uptempo brand of basketball. And Gelbaugh, earning her second POW nod this season, helped the Panthers spring one of the biggest wins of the week. Her 25 points came in handy as CD East (14-4) knocked off Commonwealth No. 1 Cumberland Valley 52-50 on Tuesday. Gelbaugh finished with a pair of treys and 18 points in a 49-33 advantage over New Oxford.
