The rain/hail/wind storms that swept through the midstate on Wednesday made smaller an already small high school softball schedule.
Pequea Valley won the Section IV title of the Lancaster-Lebanon League with a 3-0 win over Annville-Cleona. PV's Amanda Houck tossed a four-hitter and got out of a first-inning, bases-loaded jam. Donegal won the Section III title by blasting Manheim Central 12-0.
The L-L playoffs begin Saturday at Garrett Park in Willow Street. Annville-Cleona meets Hempfield at 10 a.m. Other games are Donegal vs. the loser of Thursday's game between Conestoga Valley and Solanco, Manheim Central vs. the winner of CV-Solanco and Pequea Valley vs. Manheim Twp.
Elsewhere, Susquehanna Twp. ventured into York County but the Indians failed to take their defensive game as eight errors contributed to a 9-2 loss to Red Lion. Township pitcher Allison Hartman yielded just six hits and had five strikeouts. Jackie Ingram was 2-for-2 for the Indians.
Newport doubled up West Perry 10-5 by banging out 14 hits and having Tessa Campbell limit the Mustangs to a six-pack of hits. Megan Reeser cracked a two-run homer in the first inning.
Games in which the weather was victorious were McDevitt-Lancaster Catholic, Middletown-Biglerville, James Buchanan-Shippensburg, the LD-Palmyra suspended game and the LD-Hershey regularly scheduled night game.
The Northern-at-West Perry game postponed on Tuesday will be played on Friday.
A busy schedule of games is on tap for Thursday. Cumberland Valley visits Central Dauphin in a 4:30 p.m. Commonwealth Division clash.
Mechanicsburg is trying to keep its foot in the door of the District 3-AAAA playoffs and will visit Palmyra at 4:15, and Susquehanna Twp. is at South Side Elementary School at 4:15 to face Bishop McDevitt in the Keystone Division.
On Friday, Bishop McDevitt visits Hershey at 6:30 p.m. and James Buchanan is at Shippensburg. Susquenita visits Milton Hershey in a regularly scheduled contest.
