Tom Abeling, who has performed in numerous roles during a 29-year relationship with the West Perry basketball program, is the leading candidate to become the Mustangs' next head boys' hoops coach.
According to West Perry athletic director Cory Hoffman, Abeling will be presented to the school board at Monday night's meeting as the athletic committee's recommended hire.
If approved at Monday night's school board meeting, Abeling will succeed Jason Creek on the West Perry bench. Creek was 9-13 -- 5-9 in the Mid-Penn Capital Division -- during his lone season as the Mustangs' head coach.
Creek departed West Perry after one season, accepting the head coaching post at Big Spring High School, his alma mater.
Abeling, a teacher in the computer sciences department at West Perry High School, also is the school's head track & field coach.
