LANCASTER - And then there were two.
Two of the three L-L League boys' tennis teams competing in the PIAA tournament won first-round matches on Tuesday.
In Class AAA, L-L League and District 3 runner-up Hempfield beat District 2 champ Abington Heights 4-1 at Birchwood Tennis Club in Clarks Summit.
And in Class AA, District 3 third-seed Elco blanked District 6 champ Westmont Hilltop 4-0 at Leopold Rec Center in Altoona.
Reigning L-L League and District 3 champ Manheim Township was eliminated in the first round by District 1 third-seed Council Rock North, 5-0 on Tuesday at Hershey Racquet Club.
So the Blue Streaks are out - again, with section, league and district golds to their credit this spring.
Up next for Hempfield is a quarterfinal clash on Friday against District 12 champ LaSalle College at Hershey Racquet Club at 3:30 p.m.
The winner there gets District 1 champ Conestoga or District 7 runner-up North Allegheny in a state semifinal on Saturday at high noon at HRC.
Friday's other Class AAA quarterfinals include District 7 champ Shady Side Academy against District 1 runner-up Lower Merion and District 6 winner State College against Council Rock North.
Meanwhile, in Class AA, Elco will be at HRC on Friday at 9:30 a.m. for a quarterfinal showdown against District 7 runner-up Mars, which beat District 9 champ Elk County Catholic 5-0 on Tuesday.
The Elco-Mars winner gets District 3 champ Wyomissing or District 10 champ Warren in a state semifinal on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at HRC.
Friday's other Class AA quarterfinals include District 1 champ Holy Ghost Prep against District 3 runner-up Lancaster Country Day and District 4 champ Lewisburg against District 7 champ Sewickley Academy.
All three District 3 Class AA entrants - Wyo, Lancaster Country Day and Elco - advanced to the state quarters.
