Veteran Clairton head football coach Tom Nola is changing venues according to Mike White of the Pittsburgh Post –Gazette.
Nola, who guided the Bears to four consecutive PIAA Class A titles and a staggering 66-game winning streak, is leaving Clairton to become the new head coach at Gateway.
According to the report Nola confirmed to White he was offered the job and accepted it Monday night. He declined further comment until his hiring becomes official at the Gateway School Board meeting Wednesday night.
During Nola’s 12 seasons at Clairton he compiled a 136-22 record including six WPIAL titles and those four state championships in a row.
The 66-game winning streak by the Bears under Nola, a 60-year-old retired history teacher, brought national attention to Clairton. The streak was snapped when the Bears lost to Monessen this past season.
Nola will take over for Don Militzer, whose job was opened up after only one season. Militizer replaced Terry Smith, who is now an assistant coach at Penn State after spending one season as an assistant at Temple.
