Two recent high school products — Lebanon Catholic’s Anthony Thomas and Jason Kuntzelman of Mount Calvary, both of them guards — will continue their respective basketball careers at the prep school level.
Ironically, both are headed for new prep school programs — with one of the schools fairly close and the other in a different part of the country.
Thomas, a 5-10 guard who averaged 11.8 points per game last season for Scott Clentimack’s senior-heavy Beavers (17-9), is planning to play at Montverde (Fla.) Academy in the suburban Orlando area.
A slasher who also can be effective from the perimeter, Thomas scored in double figures 13 times in 24 appearances for a Lebanon Catholic side that finished third in the District 3-A tournament and advanced to the state tournament.
A loss to Church Farm ended the Beavers’ season.
Thomas, who bagged a season-high 27 points against Elco, was named to PennLive’s District 3-A all-tournament team. In two seasons at Lebanon Catholic — Thomas relocated from Baltimore — he totaled more than 500 points.
Kuntzelman, an energetic 5-9 backcourt player who averaged 14.9 ppg and reached double figures 21 times as a senior, is headed for the new prep school program at Hilda Goodling Impact Academy in downtown York.
Kuntzelman, who averaged nearly 21 ppg as a junior, completed his Mount Calvary career with 1,228 points. In his final two seasons with Randy Fisher’s Chargers, Kuntzelman knocked down more than 100 treys.
The CCAC tournament champions last season, Mount Calvary (22-5) finished second in the District 3-A playoffs and advanced to state play for the first time. A loss to Sullivan County brought the Chargers’ season to a close.
